Whats happening lately
A wonderful client recently brought in her grandmothers beloved nest of tables . They were in pieces and in dire need of TLC. Dating around 1920 these are a wonderful example of the Art Deco .
We painstakingly restored these glorious pieces where they will be enjoyed for many generations to come...
2015 and Bywater Design has hit the ground running. Restoration and Polishing up a storm and classes have begun in earnest and are running to full capacity. We are proud and happy of our enthusiastic students who make each weeknight a pleasure for Stuart and Dave to teach.
We are proud this weekend to be involved in the inaugural Saltfest Surf Festival at Kirra Beach Coolangatta.
The Festival on March 1 will have an exciting array of Surfboards, surfwear, art, music delicious food and beverages, and more. We would love you to come and say hi, in this beautiful part of the world. A glorious way to spend a Sunny Sunday.

We are so proud of our hardworking ever enthusiastic woodworking Students. Throughout the year they embark on designing and making their own projects.
They are all wonderfully varied and the finished product shows the skills and techniques that they have learned throughout the year.
Peter has been working on these beautiful chairs through out the year, and with Davids expert guidance he has created these stunning chairs , made from jarrah and Qld Maple.
These are a credit to both Peter and David and will be a beautiful accompaniment to the Table Peter completed before hand.

You come in and shape your board to your individual requirements, rail shaping and fin placement, and it is ready for glassing after the two days.

It was a great delight to see in Australia and in Brisbane Nobuhito Ohkawa (aka Nobbby) who made a special visit to my workshop.
Nobby makes beautiful wooden surfboards and surfboard fins in Chiba City, just outside of Tokyo .
We have become friends over the last few years, sharing experiences, and I was lucky enough to see his workshop whilst I was in Japan last year, and I was happy to return the hospitality this week when Nobby made a visit to our Northgate workshop whilst he was in Brisbane .
Nobby personally delivered my custom made fins which are made from walnut , rock maple and purple heart.
I cannot wait to attach these on to one of my boards and test it out in the water

With over 300 hours of labor, this French Insprired Writing Desk was a journey of time, patience and fine detailed work. Our lovely client was inspired by a similar desk at The Lourve and wanted to emulate the fine work, and all the fine details that encapsulate this wonderful writing desk.
A rich warm timber was needed to enhance the soft design of the desk whilst blending in with the existing décor so Qld Maple was used for these beautiful qualities
The design of the desk evolved after extensive collaboration with the client and included such wonderful features such as;
handcrafted dovetailed drawers ,
Custom Brass beading , to highlight the panels and brass fretwork around the marble to embellish the design
Roll top curved timber panel door
Internal locking doors, to ensure individual compartments could be closed for privacy
The style was to emulate Louis XV opulent, yet discreet,
Marble top in keeping with the style....
Once the writing desk was made it was then hand polished and rubbed back to a 60% gloss to enhance its patina
With a love of fun , including , poker, board games and jigsaw puzzles, our clients wanted a square classic looking table that would easily house a 10,00 jigsaw puzzle, or stage a long night of poker or some family Monopoly Fun.... We created this Stylish Qld Maple table, with frosted glass for ease of cleaning and maintenance. In addition to the hidden drawers on one side to accommodate decks of cards, dice and all the other important accessories for games night !
The leather back chairs were also exclusively designed for comfort and practicality. Using cream leather, as upholstery these dining chairs make for a chic addition to the table.
With a myriad of consoles, discs, and other media components, this family room area was in dire need of streamlining. Tidying up the area, being able to house all the various components, this multi functional storage area would provide all the necessary space to do just that as well as work in effortlessly with the existing decor
Using 2 pack as the finish, the patchwork effect provides personality and quirkiness to an otherwise white bland wall.
The ample storage makes cleaning a breeze.
And of course all our drawers are dovetailed and run on undercarriage soft close runners which provide effortless and whisper quiet operation.
After refurbishing the entire room, it was time to give this little pocket of the room a makeover; creating an area that would blend seamlessly into the rest of the home but also function as an area to house television and media components.
Using traditional details to highlight the architraves a white built in entertainment unit was designed and installed.
Hoop Pine was painted to a high white gloss to happily co exist with the existing furnishings
Retractable doors were used and under carriage runners to keep the entertainment unit tidy and house all the myriad of dvd's, blue rays, cd etc...

Creating corporate furniture for Theiss has been a wonderful opportunity for Bywater Design to flex their corporate muscle and create visually appealing ,highly functional office furniture that will meet all the demands of a busy corporate environment. Using Teak veneer, Eucalypt Burl and solid Cambia edging to create a dramatic contrast. These 7.5metre long board room tables were painstakingly crafted in our Northgate workshop and polished to a high gloss to enhance the richness and durability of the timber. Using the very best of audio and electrical accessories, these tables provide all the necessary functions of a corporate meeting.
In addition to the boardroom tables, side boards and entertaining units were designed and installed to provide a smooth and functional preparation area for the high volume of staff meeting in the building .
Of course with such excessive dimensions, these boardroom tables would not be able to be delivered by normal measures. A crane lift, in the dawn hours was needed to install these wonderful pieces of furniture.
After lengthy planning and deliberation and a few strong coffees, the process of craning , and installation was a successful one.
Boardroom tables, catching the sunlight create a stunning addition to the rooms, providing a fresh new area of work and providing staff with a new clean and efficient place of preparation for meetings
