At Bywater Design, our passion for woodworking and our love of the ocean came together over a decade ago to create something truly special. Our four day Hollow Wooden Surfboard Making Workshop has been helping students of all skill levels create the wooden surfboard of their dreams ever since, and we are enormously proud of every board that has left our Boondall workshop.

A Better Board, Built the Right Way

Our surfboards use absolutely no foam. Every board is built using sustainable timbers including Paulownia, Western Red Cedar, and Cambia Ash, combining beautiful natural materials with traditional woodworking techniques and innovative board styles and patterns developed right here in our studio over many years of refinement.

The result is a board that is as beautiful as it is functional, and one you made entirely with your own hands.

The Four Day Workshop

Our workshop is designed for everyone, from the complete woodworking novice through to the experienced carpenter looking to take on an extraordinary new challenge. Over four full days in our working Boondall workshop you will learn the techniques, develop the skills, and build a finished hollow wooden surfboard that is uniquely yours.

We provide all materials and all expertise. You simply bring your enthusiasm and we take care of everything else.

Our classes are kept small to ensure every student receives the attention and guidance they need throughout the process. It is also, genuinely, one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things you can do with four days.
